What Is A West Indian?

Course Summary What Is a West Indian? What does it actually mean to be West Indian? This introductory course explores the geographical, historical and cultural foundations of West Indian identity. It examines the historic West Indies, the meaning behind terms such as Orient, Occident and Indias Occidentales, and the distinction between the existence of a people and the point at which Europeans became aware of them. The course challenges the idea that West Indian history begins with European arrival. Instead, learners are encouraged to understand the West Indies as a region with peoples, societies and histories that existed before European contact and continued to develop into distinctive modern cultures and identities. At its foundation is one simple definition: A West Indian is a person belonging to, or descended from, the peoples of the West Indies. West Indian is a geographical and cultural identity, not a race. By the end of the course, learners should have a clearer understanding of where the term West Indian comes from, what it represents, and why recognising West Indian identity in its own right matters.
